How to teach kids to EDIT their Writing

The question of ALL time...

HOW CAN I GET THEM TO "FIX" THEIR WRITING?

I ask them...Does it make sense?   They say  YES!
Have you "checked" your SPELLING?    They say  YES!
Do you have CAPITALS and PUNCTUATION?  They say YES!

HUH???  WHERE????
I cannot see capitals, puncuation, complete sentences!

AM I BLIND?
NO!

I teach FIRST GRADE!
To them...YES! It makes sense.
Yes! It's spelled correctly. ( I asked a friend...they said it was spelled right!)
And I think it has capitals & punctu...what?

Smile! ( Pretend)  They are learning.

So HOW...HOW..HOW do I teach them to correct their writing?
( Before they go to second grade?)

Reteach, review, scaffold, write daily, and do it again!

Reading Workshop

Reading Workshop

"Creating a Community of Readers"
via...LUCY  CAULKINS!

This is my newest FAVORITE thing!

I LOVE Lucy Caulkin's

READING, WRITING,
COMPREHENSION LESSONS

If you get a chance to hear her, see her, and/or youtube her...
DO IT!

When I teach reading, I don't want my students to stop and ask for help.
I want them to have skills to be independent readers.
I want them to be problem-solvers.

So, I am...

 How?
Take a picture walk. Cover the words. Make them use the visual cues in the story. Frontload any vocabulary that may change thinking, distort comprehension, or unfamiliar to them. Have them make predictions PRIOR to reading. AFTER reading, check their predictions.
I LOVE this! After reading..then what? DO SOMETHING! Reread it for NEW information. Retell it to yourself or a friend. We use our 3 fingers retell. I love this part...DIGEST IT! Just as a good meal...when you are finished, appreciate it. Think about it.
 ENJOY IT!
 You are NEVER done!
When you finish...read more! My kiddos love to stack ALL of their books on the left..as they finish reading a book...place it in a pile on their right. Keep reading! Their goal is to read more every day! STAMINA! Reading MATS are used to make goals.
Our goals are to read MORE!
We want kids to quit using their fingers to read. Good readers use their EYES! "SCOOP" up words (phrases) with your eyes. When reading, put 3-4 words together and read the phrases! GREAT time to teach prepositions & prepositional phrases!
Always,always...reread! You will see more, read more, and understand more when you reread a story. Read it to a partner, a parent, a friend. The same book can sound new when you are reading it the second or third time!
A HUGE THANK YOU to Lucy Caulkins!

So there you are..
GET  READING!

Remember....

When in doubt...
ALWAYS make it

How Do I Know if They "GET IT"???? Beyond the WORKSHEETS! FREEBIE!

I teach MATH.
I "Think"
I teach math well.

BUT..

HOW  DO  I  KNOW  IF  THEY  "GET  IT"???

How do I know if they have mastered ( or internalized )
the concept,

BEFORE  THE  TESTING  BEGINS???

I mean...it's NOT..
I REPEAT...NOT
always about

THE  TEST!

But.. my kiddos WANT to do well!

Even in First Grade
they KNOW!

They KNOW TESTS COUNT!

Whether or not we like tests or don't,

TESTS  COUNT!

And so..

How do I know if they are ready?

I have a district purchased math curriculum
I am required to teach.

We use  Expressions.

I have a pacing guide from my district to use as a "tool"
to
Keep ME on track.

Mostly to ensure I have taught the required concepts for
THE TEST!

I am NOT a fan of WASTED WORKSHEETS!

SOME...I LIKE!
SOME...I DON'T!

So ...now what?

I NEED DATA!

SHOW ME WHAT YOU KNOW!

And so..
THEY DO!

Here is my Lesson on
ADDITION using 3 digits:

So..  NOW  WHAT?

Now I have LOTS of DATA
(Student information)
 to put students into

 guided MATH groups!

I have noted students who need scaffolding in:
number sense
subitizing
numbers beyond 10
addition
grouping numbers
writing numbers
expanding numbers
place value
shape recognition

AND ALL OF THIS..

with 2 pieces of white paper & some crayons!

But...
in the next few weeks

when we

"TEST"

My kiddos will "GET IT"!

I know they will!

How to be BETTER WRITERS in First Grade

Hello everyone!
 My name is Wendy McCarty.
 I am  the creator behind...

Today's Topic...

Writing in First Grade

Now... I wish I was PERFECT.
I wish my kiddos were PERFECT.

There are NO Perfect PEOPLE!
NO Perfect KIDDOS.

No  Perfect.

Now that we have gone there...how do we get close?

We get  BETTER!

Better Readers.
Better Speakers.
Better Writers.

Better..Better...Better

( My Mantra )

HOW?

We write EVERY DAY.

Usually..more than once.

We write about our day in school
...things we like
...stories we have read
...new words we have learned
...new thoughts we have had
etc.etc.etc.

I try to do a mini-lesson on a strategy.
I add new vocabulary.  In CONTEXT.
We make connections.
We expand our thinking.
We TALK!
And it can be noisy.
It's OK.

Sometimes LEARNING is messy.
And loud. And busy.
It's OK!

We do writer's workshop.
My kids write.
AND they LOVE IT!

HOW?

Give them paper, pencils, markers, colored pencils, etc...
Give them...TIME!

And ... LET THEM TALK!
My classroom is NEVER quiet!

Talking
about writing,
 during writing,
and after writing.

TALK, Write,  Create!

Are they perfect?
NO.

Is that OK?
YES!

*(Update)

I have added new
VOCABULARY BANNERS
to my
Writing Center.

The banners
help my
 beginning writers
( HOW DO YOU SPELL.....??? )
and my
EL students
(LOTS of VISUALS )

Shout out to The Primary Brain!

I need to give a

SHOUT  OUT!

Recently, I purchased a packet from TPT.

I know, I create them.

I got busy! What can I say?

But...it has saved me a  LOT...I mean a LOT of TIME!

I want to give a shout out to

Laurin
at
The Primary Brain!

Click HERE to go to her tpt store!

I purchased her

So..how am I using them you ask?

Glad you asked...

Let me show you!

First... I got out my GUIDED READING "levels" FOLDER.
All students have a velcro name tag and I attach them into groups.
Moveable, fluid, ever changing.
I LOVE IT!

Close up of my "loves"
 that spend
daily reading time
 with ME!
EVERY DAY!

So, I used her bookmark IN A SLEEVE, as an assessment.
Gotta know WHERE to START!
I took one bookmark & gave it to the student
to take home & practice.
Notice the "CIRCLED" words?
PRACTICE  MORE!

Then I made a TEACHER copy.
 This group has 4 students.
Each student has a different highlighted color.
I highlighted the words THEY need as a group.
During WORD WORK...they will come to ME to practice as a group.
I can see at a glance which words to focus on.

Did the same with other groups.
I purchased 10 levels...enough for NOW!

I LOVE the 3 bookmarks to a page!
She did a great job!

I appreciate products that make MY LIFE easier!

THANK  YOU!

I also am using my HFW packets for my kiddos to
PRACTICE...PRACTICE...PRACTICE!!!

How do YOU teach HFW?
