How Do I Let "THEM" DO IT?

How do I let six-year-olds
take over
MY  CLASSROOM??

Not HOW...but  WHEN?

NOW!

If you want independence...

YOU have to "TEACH" it!
Be precise. Be Specific. Be Consistent.

Give them the jobs...
you don't have the time (or desire) to do!

CLASSROOM   HELPERS

If you go to pinterest there are thousands of samples of
Classroom helper cards
in a MULTITUDE of classroom themes!

These are a few I have found on pinterest....

But...putting up the cards
and
USING THEM TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
are two
different things.

And that is
THE  OBJECTIVE...

Helper ( JOB )  Cards
are a way for
student's to take responsibilty
AND
HELP THE TEACHER!

Each morning our  bell rings at 8:20 AM.
We are working at 8:21.

My students put HW folders in the basket,
backpacks & jackets on the shelves,
and get ready for ipads..
(Don't be tardy...you will miss ipad time)

While they are "working".
I take name cards
and
change the helpers.

MY JOBS are:
Line Leader
Door Holder
Excuser
Messenger
Clean Up Crew (2 students)
Ball Handlers ( 2 for recess)
Tech Teachers ( 4 students )

They change daily.

They biggest change I have made is..

YOU MUST BE
"ON TIME AND IN YOUR SEAT"
TO BE A HELPER!

WOW...no more tardies!
EVERYONE WANTS TO BE A HELPER!

AND

They can choose their job.

When I turn over the name cards...
(Yesterday's names to the back of the pile,,)
I ask..
"Do you want to be a ____   OR  _____?"
Whatever the next two jobs available are.

They CHOOSE what they want to do.

That choice allows them to take personal responsibility.
AND THEY DO!

Allow the little ones to be a PART of the classroom!
They LOVE IT!

Here is a little "HELPER"
to help YOU get started...

to do???

MAKE  CRAYONS!

I made chunky "recycled" crayons
with no electricity NEEDED!

First, unwrap crayons..
KIDS LOVE to do this!
Better THEM  than ME! :)

Arrange in silicone molds.
I have used hearts, gingerbread men, Christmas trees, and snowmen.
*TIP...the LESS details the better.
Think CHUNKY...easier to pop out in one piece.

This day.. I made a color mixture.
I have done some solids.

Set outside on the cement.
HEAT IT UP!

This was at 3:00 PM...too  hot!

HOT, Gooey  MESS! :)

CLASSROOM  LIBRARY ORGANIZATION

OOppss   I DID  IT  AGAIN!

WHAT???

Yes ..I  DID!

What  did  I  do??

I redid my classroom LIBRARY!
 AGAIN!

If you read my last post on my
classroom library...
you know, I TRIED TO INCLUDE THEM!

https://1stgradefireworks.blogspot.com/2017/04/my-lovehate-relationship.html

My ATTEMPT was to allow my first graders to
share the love of my library
...by HELPING to sort, label, and bookcase the
classroom books.

In the "big" picture..
Good thought.

REALITY...

NO  WAY!
They are seven!

Their idea of ORGANIZATION is
"if my shoes are tied, then I can go to recess!"

First.....Then...Last!

So...start over!
I need a "redo"... a "mulligan"...
A  MAJOR  DO-OVER!

So..Here I go.

FIRST,

HOW much shelf space do I really have for tubs?

How many tubs will "fit" on the shelves?
How many books will fit in each tub?

This will determine the number of labels for the tubs.

I ended up with

36... YES!

 36  LABELS!

WOW!

So...NOW  WHAT?

I labeled ALL of my tubs.
BIG LABELS!

Then..

I printed the SAME labels

BUT ...smaller...POSTAGE STAMP SIZE!

I printed 9 SHEETS to a page!
WHAT??   WHY??

Because...then I have the EXACT same picture
 on BOTH the TUB
and the BOOKS!

MATCH the book label to the TUB label.

(Yes..SPOOKLEY is in the PUMPKIN tub! )
* Makes my TEACHER HEART happy!

How do YOU get them?

Take a picture ( on YOUR phone...), OR
 go to PINTEREST, OR
... TPT

:)

PRINT...

Tape
( or print on Avery address labels)
to your tub & books...

AND  VOILA!

  DONE!

My NEWEST LOVE!

I got mine at AMAZON!

*I did NOT receive compensation for this. I just LOVE it!

A few of my tubs are seen here ...
 on the bookcases.

More here...on bookcases.

And so...I hope you are ready to
ORGANIZE those BOOKS!

After all...it's about getting books into kids hands
AND THEN...
PUTTING THEM AWAY!

Have fun!
Stop by next MONDAY for MORE!

Leave me a comment...
HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE YOUR CLASSROOM BOOKS?

My Top 12 Summer Reading Books

I know.
I brought home  "THE  TUB!"
THE  BIG  TUB!
THE BIG TUB THAT REQUIRES ...
WHEELS!

I packed up for Summer Vacation.

I put things away in my classroom.

I CLOROXED the desks, tables, counter.
( A little  Germaphobe...)

and I was ready to go.

But wait!

WHAT WILL I "READ"
ON SUMMER VACATION?

And then.. I spotted
THE  TUB!
THE BIG TUB!

And I filled it!

I went through my TEACHER LIBRARY..
YES, I have MY OWN!

and  I grabbed just a few...
Well..OK..
A  LOT
of books to read or reread this Summer.

I can read
while sitting near the pool,
 or the beach,
or my backyard.

Here is my top 12.

Read to SELF..LET THEM READ!

READ TO SELF...

I think this is my favorite time of the day.
My class is NEVER quiet... NOT even during READ TO SELF.
But the hmmmmmm of firsties reading ...
IT'S THE BEST!

My kiddos each have their own book box..
(Donor's Choose ladies...gotta get going on that!)
I got mine at REALLY GOOD STUFF.
Mine are the older model...LOVE THEM!
But if I was purchasing TODAY...
I would get the book boxes with
STABILIZERS..
They take up a little more room on the bookshleves..
BUT...They won't fall over when the kiddos put the bigger books (ANTHOLOGY) in it!

My kiddos get 10 books.
3 are leveled readers from our Journeys Series.
1 is their Journey decodeable that WE ALL have read together!
2 are THEIR CHOICE ( usually picture / theme books that are a stretch for them to read )
and
4 from my leveled library.
They can choose any 4 from the numbered tub
( I tell them their reading level ).
I must admit...
my library is NOT exactly where I want it to be.
CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS
(as always)

So how do we do READ TO SELF???
We do READ TO SELF every day after lunch.
They come in get out their book box AND
 their Journeys ANTHOLOGY
(which we have read MANY MANY times!)

They are excused by "quiet groups"to
GO ANY PLACE IN THE CLASSROOM
(not underdesks / tables ...Safety )
where they can read quietly.
Then they..
"TURN YOUR BACK TO ANYONE NEAR YOU!"

Some face the wall...some stretch out..some stay at their desk..or move to someone else's desk!

We say "Everyone...  WHISPER...and  READ!"
And they read!

I use an online countdown timer
and when the timer goes off..we are done!

At the beginning of the year our
STAMINA
was about 3-5 minutes.

Then we discuss what we liked..what changes we wanted to make..etc...
They now read for 20-25 minutes.

They would read longer, but really...
we do math next & I run out of time!

What do I do during READ to self?
CIRCULATE THE ROOM!
If you want kids to stay on task..they have to SEE you!
I also take a few notes on what I hear, I can sit next to a child & assess, whisper discuss any problems, changes, growth I have noticed!

This is a time to let them
ENJOY READING!
And they DO!

PLEASE.....don't give up independent reading!
I have heard teachers say...I DON'T HAVE TIME!
You always have time to let them READ!

Here's my cuties in action!
