Bats, Bats, Bats

Just an update on our BAT unit!

To see our beginning plans
click  HERE

We have been reading, writing, discussing, posting, etc etc etc
about BATS!

So far...writing was  ...minimal at best!

Now...we are WRITING!

Started with a BAT folder.
Added their BAT Booklet...lots of BAT activities and
reading comprehension pages.
Lots of learning in that LITTLE BAT BOOK!

We took our learning to the ANCHOR CHART!
Post it facts ...they wanted to sort them by similarities!

Next...
SLOPPY COPIES!
Let the writing COMMENCE!

And then...they read their stories and we did a shared writing.
(I wrote what THEY told me to write.)

The "eyes", "lips", "house", and "moon"
are visuals to remind them to write about
what an animal LOOKS LIKE, FOOD it EATS, SHELTER, and
what it does during the day & night...

Lots of support for EL student's.

Tonight I am typing this up to add to our fluency binders.
Practice, practice, practice!

SO? How are they doing?
 They are doing GREAT!

Now...they want to write their own NON-FICTION Books!
Bats first...and then other animals.
Can we? Can we?

OK.

If you REALLY want to!       :)

EPIC FAILURE!

I should have known!

I should have known!

When kids are QUIET...TOO QUIET...I should have known!

Today I introduced a new center into our

MAY DO'S...

IT WAS A GREAT MINI LESSON!

I showed them the WORD STAMPS!

Modeled, discussed, made words to showed  them how, set up / clean up...

the WHOLE ENCHILADA!

They could stamp words using the "self-inking" letter stamps...

OR...

The WORD stamps ...using the PROVIDED ink pads!

( Not tough, right?)

Paper is always in the writing center...and

"LET THE WORDS FLOW!"
Word Work Heaven...

NOT!

As I was busy pulling groups for GUIDED READING,

I thought it was a "little to quiet over there..."
(shoulda known).

Here is what they did...

"Almost".... stamped letters & words...

AND  THEN????

THEY stamped the FLOOR!
With Permanent INK!

( These pictures were AFTER we tried to get it off!)

Wouldn't have been so sad...except they were JUST cleaned!)

OH NO!

Breathe! So...
After I took ALL of the stamps, ink pads, and PAPER
AWAY! ( Time out!)

Who do I tell first?
Janitor?
Admin?
Teacher next door?

I chose neither...
Trusty Miracle Cleaner to the rescue...

I swear....these things clean ANYTHING!

So...after I gave my students the
" I am SOOOOO  disappointed...lecture"
and the
"These will be put away until I feel you are responsible enough" lecture...

We   They  cleaned the floor and then ...

Life  goes on!

BUT I had just given them the greatest mini lesson on how to use the stamps...

EPIC  FAILURE!

Next lesson to happen SOON!

Well...not too soon!

(They can write the words with markers for awhile).

Again...Life goes ON!  :)

Nibits for Newbies...10.25.15

If it's Sunday..
It's time for
NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!

This week's theme..

TEACHER CALENDARS..
AKA
How to Keep Life Organized
( on paper )  :)

I don't know about YOU..but I have WAY too much going on in my life!
Classroom, family, meetings, deadlines, appointments, etc etc..

So how..HOW..HOW DO WE DO IT?

Now, I have a phone..I use it .. A LOT!

But...I  am a paper person...I need to see it, touch it, add colors to it!
( I know..I LIKE COLORS!)

So...
GET YOURSELF a DESKTOP Calendar.
BUT..DON'T put it on your desk!
TOO BIG!

I Tape it to the whiteboard next to my "TEACHING AREA".
I can look at it each moment..if I need to.

I use Krista Wallden's
CREATIVE CLIPS Colorful Calendar!

Now..
I get out my trusty
FLAIR PENS.

(I LOVE THEM!)

I write EVERYTHING...I MEAN EVERYTHING..on my calendar!
Preps, meetings, notes for IST's, IEP's, etc, etc, etc
NO ONE sees it (close up)
BUT ME!
I check it 10-15 times a day!
Keeps me on my toes!
I use different colors for different things I need to remember.
( PE is red, MUSIC is Green, etc etc)

Just keeps me organized.
( and YES...once a week, I take a picture to keep in my phone)

You can use ANY Calendar...I just LOVE Krista's COLORS!
SO...
Let's get ORGANIZED!

Bad blogger...sorry..BATS!

I know..
It's been awhile.
Life is BUSY!

We have a 2 week fall break each OCTOBER!
LOVE IT!

But...before you go on vacation:

#1

Parent Conferences
25 of them this year...23 families came! :)

#2

Update, add apps, and LEARN HOW TO USE
25 ipads!  LOTS of PD but no time to practice..

#3
Assess, report cards, pacing guides, and lesson plans
done & ready to go for next quarter!
( While I am conferencing?)
Whenever...

So...sorry I have been "laxidasical"
BUT..

I  AM  BACK!

Hubby & I took a FANTASTIC vacation!

All rested & relaxed..a little sun &  fun...goes  a LONG WAY!

So what am I doing in class?

My new FAVORITE LOVE...

SCHOLASTIC  NEWS!

I have had Scholastic News for a LONG, LONG  time!
But...

Not that we have ipads...

SCHOLASTIC NEWS APP!
OMG!

If you have NOT downloaded the FREE App ( with subscription )

GO DO IT NOW!

My kiddos are SO, SO, SO  engaged!

We read together, discuss facts, they use the vocabulary icons, LOVE the videos...
Oh be still my heart......and then...

WE  WRITE!

After our WHOLE  CLASS  read,
they choose a partner to read with,
they take notes in their notebooks..partners first..and discuss
(Do I hear "turn & talk"?)
Then we compare notes with other partners..

We discuss our "findings" as a class to clear up any MISCONCEPTIONS.

EXTRA! EXTRA!
With each subscription, you also get..the ARCHIVES!
You can go back 2 years!
For me...
That means they got to read 3..YES, 3...newsletters about BATS!
COMPARE & CONTRAST...WOWZA!
More notetaking...more learning!

Then,
we  plan ( graphic organizers )
 & WRITE!
( Do I hear ANGELS SINGING????)

YES!  WE  WRITE!

They were so engaged..I had to stop the writer's workshop!
( They MOANED!)
( I KNOW...BUT WE HAD TO GO HOME!)
only to be continued the next day!

They are sooooo  into it!

Finishing up our projects next week!

Sniff...sniff...Makes my little teacher heart HAPPY!

I am NOT receiving ANY money for promoting SCHOLASTIC NEWS!
Just found a little "piece of Heaven" that works for ME!
If you are interested...here you go!

A few snipits from Room 3:

We made BAT folders to hold our BAT WORK! :)

BAT Anchor chart...in progress.

Sticky note "notes"..

LOTS of learning going on!

Great week!

Next week??

PUMPKINS!

Nibits for Newbies 10.18.15

If it's SUNDAY..
It's time for
NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!

This week's Theme...

THEMES

???  WHAT??
Themes? What do you mean?

I mean themes.
Not like apples, solar system, Easter eggs...

I mean LARGE...LONG-LASTING themes!

Who wants to change the bulletin boards, centers, papers, cutesy decor, etc., etc., etc.
each week?  2 weeks? MONTHLY????   UGH!
NO!
NO  MORE!

MAKE IT STOP!

Advice from a veteran teacher....
IS THIS YOU???

Now..add to that the 1 million pinterest boards telling us how CUTE our classroom should be...
AT  ALL  TIMES!

NO!  NOT!!  NEVER!!!

I give up!  So now what?

I choose 4 themes per year...

Fall,  Winter,  Spring,  Summer

Everything  I  do  (  or don't get to ) fits into one of these themes!

If I do a cute apple project...goes on the bulletin board for FALL.
If we don't get to Johnny Appleseed...so what? Pumpkins will go up next.

Instead of begin so specific..I spend WAY TO MUCH TIME changing my classroom
STUFF....I can add to the theme...or not....

DO YOU REALLY "TEACH" HALLOWEEN?
"NO!"
Jackolanterns & Pumkins?   YES!

So spend "YOUR" precious time on the big picture!
If you get to the "cutesy" things...GREAT!
If not....move on!

Look at your lesson plans.
Chunk your lessons under  a  season.

Do you really "teach" CHRISTMAS?"
I can't...but I can teach
WINTER!

Just so happens...Dec. 25 is in WINTER!
WAHOOO!

So is NEW YEAR'S  &  Martin Luther King, etc etc

I change my Theme(s):

1. Fall- the day after Labor Day
2. Winter- Thanksgiving Break
3.Spring- March 1
4. Summer- May  1

Enough time to enjoy..but NOT too much!

Relax...don't" over do"the little things.

THEMES...the way to go!
Enjoy!

Nibits for Newbies 10.11.15

If it's SUNDAY...
It's
Nibits for Newbies!

Today's theme...

BACKPACKS!

I HATE   DISLIKE
HAVE TRIPPED OVER TOO MANY OF THEM!

So..what to do?  What to do?

Well, my school does NOT have these...

Though I think ALL primary classroom should.

AND

I can't stand this...
(OK...this is NOT bad...My chairs were  always CLOSER together
 &
 backpacks & stuff was
EVERYWHERE!
You couldn't walk between the chairs & stuff was always
 ON THE FLOOR!
UGH!

Until...

I need a Shelf!
NO!
I need LOTS of Shelves...
that can hold a LOT of weight!
(So where do I find multiple shelving units that can hold weight?)
HOME DEPOT!
GARAGE  DEPT!

TADA!

Home Depot....$39.97
( Teacher's Salary...)  :)

I attached 2 eye-hooks to the wall on each side.
Then I "ZIP-TIED" each side to the back wall..
(  CALIF. -  EARTHQUAKE  SAFETY )

LOVE...LOVE...LOVE  IT!

I don't let kiddos put ANYTHING on the top.  ( MY extra tubs, usually )
They stand up their backpacks on
next 3 shelves.
We save the bottom for jackets!
( Usually, wet ....)

SO...room for everything!
NOT ON THEIR CHAIRS!

WBT Rule #5...

Keep your TEACHER  happy!

Have a great week!

Old McDonald...ahem...FARMER WITHOUT A FARM...had a Farm...

Old McDonald had a farm...
( Song will be in your head ALL DAY)

But my HUBBY....AKA....FARMER WITHOUT A FARM

has made our backyard into a farm!

If you follow me...you know how MY farm grows!
(Type FARM in my search bar....WOWZA!)

So..updates..

The chickens are now...
IN PUBERTY!
(GREAT....Emotional UPS & DOWNS, LOUD squawking, EATING like PIGS!)
HAHA
They haven't laid eggs yet...BUT I AM WAITING!
Hurry UP!
This  is  RAPUNZEL ( granddaughter's named her )

This is SNOW WHITE..I know...
SHE had Black hair!

Sunflowers in bloom!
Harvesting seeds, peppers, tomatillos...YUMMY!

Tomatillos are like sour tomatoes.
They add great flavor to salsa!

Pumpkins  (2)  have turned orange.
Little on on the ground, just lovin life.
NOT ready ...YET.

BIG ONE ( 10+ pounds )  is HANGING around!
LITERALLY!
Started growing in the tomotoes, so we made a sling for it!
LOVED IT!  Growing happily!
( Until we harvest..HAHA)

So what do we do with ALL the produce?

CAN  IT!
(Actually,,,hubby does)

LOTS of tomato sauce, salsa, and spaghetti sauces!

Next...my mom gave us the most beautiful PEACHES!
We will be sharing them at THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS!
(I am thinking fresh peach pie...YUMMY!)

And so..
Our little  gigantic gardens continue to grow.
We anticipate veggies until Thanksgiving!

Love California weather!
( Well, almost...we would LOVE LOTS of rain!)

Happy Fall 'Yall !
