IT'S...SO....HOT!!!!!!!

Quick post...

Can't work on my laptop TOO long.

IT'S  TOO   HOT!!!!

This week  NORCAL  is SCORTCHING!

Over 100  degrees for 7 days!

109  today!

YUCK!

So what's a teacher
on summer vacation
to do???

MAKE  CRAYONS!

What????

I made chunky "recycled" crayons
with no electricity NEEDED!

(NOT GOING TO
TURN ON THE OVEN
 IN THIS HEAT!)

First, unwrap crayons..
KIDS LOVE to do this!
Better THEM  than ME! :)

Arrange in silicone molds.
I have used hearts, gingerbread men, Christmas trees, and snowmen.
*TIP...the LESS details the better.
Think CHUNKY...easier to pop out in one piece.

This day.. I made a color mixture.
I have done some solids.

Set outside on the cement.
HEAT IT UP!

This was at 3:00 PM...too  hot!

HOT, Gooey  MESS! :)

Some were in the shade..redid them the next day!

ALL DONE!

Ready for a tub in my WRITING CENTER!

NO  waste!  NO  inside  HEAT!

SOLAR  at it's BEST!

NOW...How to make dinner the same way???

:)

NO...I think we will go OUT!

Stay cool my friends!

Pin WHAT???????

Pin what?
Pin where?

PINTEREST!!!

I am a visual learner.
I love PICTURES!

I know...MY FAMILY!

I have tubs, and frames FULL of PICTURES!

Maybe that's WHY my
next  Favorite LOVE is...

PINTEREST!
I have a pinterest "home".

I pin on about 150 boards.
Some mine.
Some others.

Here are a few of my favorites:

CLASSROOM  LIBRARY ORGANIZATION

OOppss   I DID  IT  AGAIN!

WHAT???

Yes ..I  DID!

What  did  I  do??

I redid my classroom LIBRARY!
 AGAIN!

If you read my last post on my
classroom library...
you know, I TRIED TO INCLUDE THEM!

https://1stgradefireworks.blogspot.com/2017/04/my-lovehate-relationship.html

My ATTEMPT was to allow my first graders to
share the love of my library
...by HELPING to sort, label, and bookcase the
classroom books.

In the "big" picture..
Good thought.

REALITY...

NO  WAY!
They are seven!

Their idea of ORGANIZATION is
"if my shoes are tied, then I can go to recess!"

First.....Then...Last!

So...start over!
I need a "redo"... a "mulligan"...
A  MAJOR  DO-OVER!

So..Here I go.

FIRST,

HOW much shelf space do I really have for tubs?

How many tubs will "fit" on the shelves?
How many books will fit in each tub?

This will determine the number of labels for the tubs.

I ended up with

36... YES!

 36  LABELS!

WOW!

So...NOW  WHAT?

I labeled ALL of my tubs.
BIG LABELS!

Then..

I printed the SAME labels

BUT ...smaller...POSTAGE STAMP SIZE!

I printed 9 SHEETS to a page!
WHAT??   WHY??

Because...then I have the EXACT same picture
 on BOTH the TUB
and the BOOKS!

MATCH the book label to the TUB label.

(Yes..SPOOKLEY is in the PUMPKIN tub! )
* Makes my TEACHER HEART happy!

How do YOU get them?

Take a picture ( on YOUR phone...), OR
 go to PINTEREST, OR
... TPT

:)

PRINT...

Tape
( or print on Avery address labels)
to your tub & books...

AND  VOILA!

  DONE!

My NEWEST LOVE!

I got mine at AMAZON!

*I did NOT receive compensation for this. I just LOVE it!

A few of my tubs are seen here ...
 on the bookcases.

More here...on bookcases.

And so...I hope you are ready to
ORGANIZE those BOOKS!

After all...it's about getting books into kids hands
AND THEN...
PUTTING THEM AWAY!

Have fun!
Stop by next MONDAY for MORE!

Leave me a comment...
HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE YOUR CLASSROOM BOOKS?

My Top 12 Summer Reading Books

I know.
I brought home  "THE  TUB!"
THE  BIG  TUB!
THE BIG TUB THAT REQUIRES ...
WHEELS!

I packed up for Summer Vacation.

I put things away in my classroom.

I CLOROXED the desks, tables, counter.
( A little  Germaphobe...)

and I was ready to go.

But wait!

WHAT WILL I "READ"
ON SUMMER VACATION?

And then.. I spotted
THE  TUB!
THE BIG TUB!

And I filled it!

I went through my TEACHER LIBRARY..
YES, I have MY OWN!

and  I grabbed just a few...
Well..OK..
A  LOT
of books to read or reread this Summer.

I can read
while sitting near the pool,
 or the beach,
or my backyard.

Here is my top 12.

Working on my CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT.

LOVE  Guided MATH!
Whole class strategies...small group skills!

My go to.  Reading & Writing Strategies.
I am adding them to my Lesson Plans
so my minilessons are planned! :)

I am incorporating this into my
Morning  Meetings!

More Reading for my FIRSTIES!

Always a refresher!

WOW!
I wonder IF I will finish ALL of them!
Really doesn't matter.
Some is better then NONE!

I am ALWAYS looking for ways to improve my craft.
Teaching is a never-ending journey.

For my students
AND
For ME!

Home Improvement..Where did I Put that ICE PACK?

Yeah! Summer...Ahhhh

But in my house

HOME IMPROVEMENT!

Disclaimer:

My hubby can do ANYTHING!
I have seen him tear apart a washing machine
AND
PUT IT BACK TOGETHER!

So when he says...
I CAN!
HE CAN!

BUT...
How long will it take for OUR ( not his..OUR) bodies  to
recouperate!

I am 50+ years old.
I can do work.
(I LOVE POWERTOOLS!)

But...
My arms, legs, BACK...don't recoup the way they used to!
Some MONDAYS I like going back to work at school.

No lifting, stooping, pulling, etc...required.

BUT...
I AM CHEAP!

Save me $$$....I am happy. SO....

We redid kitchen, 3 bathrooms, and now, backyard fence!

( We did hire help...We cannot do it ALL!)

And so...here we go!

Kitchen  BEFORE.. yes 1980's white tile with brown grout.
Don't JUDGE! :)

Kitchen  AFTER...Granite..Stone backsplash..granite sink
MY HAPPY PLACE!

One of the bathrooms...All granite the same...
COPPER  SINKS!
LOVE THEM!

Bathrooms...DONE!

New  fence...
We have lived here 25 years.
More to do. ALWAYS!
Baby Steps.

Home maintenance is a VITAL part of home ownership.

Never DONE!

Now where did I put that ICE PACK???

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!

What things do YOU do around your living space?

Routines Make the World go Round

Do you have a daily ROUTINE?

I do!

I get up early.
I get a cup of coffee.. that is ready for me.
( that I set the night before while I am doing dinner dishes)
I check my emails.
I make breakfast & lunch.
Wake up hubby.
Shower & get ready for work.

I LOVE my morning routine.

When things run smoothly...I know what to expect.

That's how our kids feel in the classroom.

When routines work
EVERYONE knows what to expect & how to do it!

ROUTINES MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND!

Here are MY  top  3  Routines

 for a smooth running classroom.

ENTERING  THE CLASSROOM:

I meet my kids on the playground.
Our "first" bell ( line up ) is at 8:20.
I go out to our line at 8:15 and  remind ALL of my students to get out of their BACKPACKS their BLACK homework folder (provided by me at the beginning of the year..black because I don't use black for any other folder in my room..and their READ AT HOME envelope with TAKE HOME BOOKS.

They have them "in their hands" before we walk to the door.

WHY?
NO ONE has to "dig through" their backpacks when we get in the door.
While we are at the door...I have a Home Depot shelving unit next to the door. They put their backpacks and jackets ON THE SHELVES! NO backpacks or jackets on CHAIRS! No room!

After we enter..2 baskets on the table next to the door. One "homework"..the other RAH (Read AT Home) Envelopes.
Black folders in HW basket, Book envelopes in RAH basket.

DONE!
(Any notes or OTHER STUFF...in HW basket).

NOW, they get a chair
( stacked at the back of the room..see routine #3)
and WALK to their desk.

When the starting bell rings at 8:25
(5 minutes after we enter...)
I choose the HELPERS for the day.
You can only be a HELPER if you are sitting in your seat when the bell rings! I am prompt!
( No tardies, wanderers, "chatting").
If you are TARDY...you won't be a helper on that day if it's your turn. You will have to wait until tomorrow, if you are on time.
Incentive for getting to school ON TIME!

I choose my helpers.
2 of my 10 helpers for the day are
TECH  TEACHERS.
I ask the TECH  TEACHERS to choose a "quiet partner" to help them pass out ipads ( We are a 1:1 school ) and earbuds ( they have their own in numbered baggies.
 (We number EVERYTHING!)

They get their ipads...long into our district reading/phonics practice program, and GO TO WORK!
ALL of this takes 10 minutes.
8:20-8:30
NO MUSS...NO FUSS!

Transitions. THE WORST TIME OF THE DAY!

Kids are working. The "Hummm" of classroom work.
Happy Teacher.
And then...the timer goes OFF!
WE MUST STOP!
Time to TRANSITION TO SOMETHING ELSE!
NO!
First graders like to MOVE...and FAST!

So to help...we  FREEZE!
?
When the timer goes off...we freeze! I tell them they have one minute to clean up and return to their desks.
Always return to their desk.
Kind of like their "LANDING  PAD".

After everyone is sitting down ( well, almost everyone..there are always the 1-2 stragglers )

I say.. "One, two, three EYES ON ME!"
They respond  " One, two, EYES ON YOU!"
And then a call out... ( I have a list )
Could be "MACARONI & CHEESE"
They respond "EVERYBODY FREEZE!"
AND THEY DO!

I hold them "frozen" for 3-4 seconds.
THEY LOVE THIS!

And then they get a point for the class (if they are frozen)
OR
I get a point if they are NOT!

(Points don't go to ANYTHING...just on the wall for the day!)
They have NOT asked me about the points ALL YEAR!

After we are settled, I can give directions for our next
activity.  I do this SAME ROUTINE ALL DAY FOR TRANSITIONS!

No problems!

The LAST 30 minutes of CLASS.
It's almost OVER!
The day has come to an end.

HOW TO GET THEM OUT THE DOOR?

STOP!

Many things to do BEFORE we leave.

REMEMBER...The class is ALL of yours.
It's NOT my job to clean up, put everything away, and pick up the classroom AFTER they leave.

We ALL work here. The community is for ALL of us.

We dismiss at 2:30.

At 2:10
we STOP, put our work away,
and FREEZE to go back to our desks.

At 2:15  we begin the EXIT PROCESS.

My 2 TECH TEACHERS (helpers) put ALL of the ipads back into the cart ( I have taught them HOW to do this MANY TIMES.)

I will plug them in after school.
Plugs can be tricky.

2 of my other HELPERS are the
CLEAN UP CREW.
They EACH choose a 'friend' to help them
STACK ALL OF THE CHAIRS
into stacks of 6.
Push the stacks to the back of the room, and clean all papres, crayons, pencils from the floor.

While these HELPERS are working SILENTLY..
the rest of the class goes to the carpet.

Each day 5-6 of my students can come to
AUTHOR'S  CHAIR.
( 5  color coded groups )

As we transition to the carpet, I ask "RED GROUP" if they would like to "READ...in the teacher's chair" OR  PASS (for this week).

They read one story from their JOURNAL. Their choice.

We LISTEN ( being a good audience )
and then they can choose 1 person to
"ASK THE AUTHOR A QUESTION".

We must listen, to formulate a HOT question.

After all 5 have read..I have one student bring me EVERYTHING from their cubby. (Student mailboxes ).

I go over ALL work we are taking home.
I open the BLACK  HOMEWORK folder, wher I have taken out last night's HW and put in tonight's HW.
and
I show them their RAH books to read tonight.

After all of our work has been reviewed..

I excuse them 3 at a time to clean out their cubbies, take everything to their desk, get their backpack & jacket, take it to their desk, LANDING PAD, and pack up to go home.

When they are ready ..
LINE  UP!

I start a GOODBYE CHANT...
"bye bye Butterfly..See you later alligator...etc"

They must be ready to go before we end the chant.

This takes a little practice.
NO... A LOT OF PRACTICE!

BUT...

We can get out the door in 5 minutes!

This ends my
TOP 3 ROUTINES

Many more throughout the day.

I like routines in MY LIFE.
So do the KIDS!

What routines do you have that you do EVERY DAY?
Pick your top one & share in the comments.
We can ALL learn for each other!

Happy  DAY!

My LOVE/HATE relationship

Classroom Library

I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with my
classroom library.

I LOVE BOOKS!

I Love my kiddos to LOVE books!

I Love the organization of a classroom library.

I HATE PUTTING BOOKS AWAY!

I HATE  A MESSY CLASSROOM LIBRARY.

And so...

What's a teacher to do?

REDO IT AGAIN!

So, How many times do I have to do it..
before I LOVE it?? (Again )

Here is the BEFORE...

So, why? Oh, why?
Why mess with a GOOD thing?
( Can you hear the shame in my voice?)

BECAUSE.
Because I know what wonderful books are in the tubs.
BUT ...  the kids DON'T!

They know their favorites.
They go to the same tub over & over.
I LOVE THAT.
BUT....

How do you know... there might be a BOOK you would LOVE BETTER!
They don't search.
They just go to what they know.

SO..
I am expanding their KNOWLEDGE BASE!

I have decided to TAKE AWAY THE TUBS!
WHAT????
I know...you with OCD will HATE ME!

WHY?
Because..it's not MY library...it's OURS!
I am going to dump EVERY book in a pile in the middle of our carpet area.
AND WE WILL SORT!

Common core says NONFICTION is a PRIORITY!

My kids don't even know WHAT Nonfiction books we have!
So...we shall sort!
Fiction...Nonfiction...author study...science...etc..etc..etc...

NOT ME!
Not my SUMMER! (again )
OURS...ALL OF US!

(Do not do this the day your admin is observing YOU!)
This will take time...time well spent!

My thoughts are to have the kids make labels..NOT ME!

And put them right ON THE SHELF!
YES...ON THE SHELF!

They take ownership,  so they can put things away!
Not ME!

Others have perservered..

IT IS POSSIBLE!

WOW!

A Classroom library that mimics a PUBLIC LIBRARY!???

They will know HOW to USE a PUBLIC LIBARY!

Not "What tub is -------  book in?"
Hmmmm...

Food for thought.

So...if you are thinking of
RAISING THE BAR
in YOUR classroom library..

LET THEM DO IT!

Close your eyes...
change your MINDSET..
and collaborate
 WITH YOUR STUDENTS!

They might surprise YOU!
