How Do I Know if They "GET IT"???? Beyond the WORKSHEETS! FREEBIE!

I teach MATH.
I "Think"
I teach math well.

BUT..

HOW  DO  I  KNOW  IF  THEY  "GET  IT"???

How do I know if they have mastered ( or internalized )
the concept,

BEFORE  THE  TESTING  BEGINS???

I mean...it's NOT..
I REPEAT...NOT
always about

THE  TEST!

But.. my kiddos WANT to do well!

Even in First Grade
they KNOW!

They KNOW TESTS COUNT!

Whether or not we like tests or don't,

TESTS  COUNT!

And so..

How do I know if they are ready?

I have a district purchased math curriculum
I am required to teach.

We use  Expressions.

I have a pacing guide from my district to use as a "tool"
to
Keep ME on track.

Mostly to ensure I have taught the required concepts for
THE TEST!

I am NOT a fan of WASTED WORKSHEETS!

SOME...I LIKE!
SOME...I DON'T!

So ...now what?

I NEED DATA!

SHOW ME WHAT YOU KNOW!

And so..
THEY DO!

Here is my Lesson on
ADDITION using 3 digits:

So..  NOW  WHAT?

Now I have LOTS of DATA
(Student information)
 to put students into

 guided MATH groups!

I have noted students who need scaffolding in:
number sense
subitizing
numbers beyond 10
addition
grouping numbers
writing numbers
expanding numbers
place value
shape recognition

AND ALL OF THIS..

with 2 pieces of white paper & some crayons!

But...
in the next few weeks

when we

"TEST"

My kiddos will "GET IT"!

I know they will!

How to be BETTER WRITERS in First Grade

Hello everyone!
 My name is Wendy McCarty.
 I am  the creator behind...

1stgradefireworks

I create classroom and homeschool materials
that engage young minds and help teacher to support instruction.
You can see my products in my TPT Store:

1stgradefireworks

Today's Topic...

Writing in First Grade

Now... I wish I was PERFECT.
I wish my kiddos were PERFECT.

There are NO Perfect PEOPLE!
NO Perfect KIDDOS.

No  Perfect.

Now that we have gone there...how do we get close?

We get  BETTER!

Better Readers.
Better Speakers.
Better Writers.

Better..Better...Better

( My Mantra )

HOW?

We write EVERY DAY.

Usually..more than once.

We write about our day in school
...things we like
...stories we have read
...new words we have learned
...new thoughts we have had
etc.etc.etc.

I try to do a mini-lesson on a strategy.
I add new vocabulary.  In CONTEXT.
We make connections.
We expand our thinking.
We TALK!
And it can be noisy.
It's OK.

Sometimes LEARNING is messy.
And loud. And busy.
It's OK!

We do writer's workshop.
My kids write.
AND they LOVE IT!

HOW?

Give them paper, pencils, markers, colored pencils, etc...
Give them...TIME!

And ... LET THEM TALK!
My classroom is NEVER quiet!

Talking
about writing,
 during writing,
and after writing.

TALK, Write,  Create!

Are they perfect?
NO.

Is that OK?
YES!

*(Update)

I have added new
VOCABULARY BANNERS
to my
Writing Center.

The banners
help my
 beginning writers
( HOW DO YOU SPELL.....??? )
and my
EL students
(LOTS of VISUALS )

Shout out to The Primary Brain!

I need to give a

SHOUT  OUT!

Recently, I purchased a packet from TPT.

I know, I create them.

I got busy! What can I say?

But...it has saved me a  LOT...I mean a LOT of TIME!

I want to give a shout out to

Laurin
at
The Primary Brain!

Click HERE to go to her tpt store!

I purchased her

So..how am I using them you ask?

Glad you asked...

Let me show you!

First... I got out my GUIDED READING "levels" FOLDER.
All students have a velcro name tag and I attach them into groups.
Moveable, fluid, ever changing.
I LOVE IT!

Close up of my "loves"
 that spend
daily reading time
 with ME!
EVERY DAY!

So, I used her bookmark IN A SLEEVE, as an assessment.
Gotta know WHERE to START!
I took one bookmark & gave it to the student
to take home & practice.
Notice the "CIRCLED" words?
PRACTICE  MORE!

Then I made a TEACHER copy.
 This group has 4 students.
Each student has a different highlighted color.
I highlighted the words THEY need as a group.
During WORD WORK...they will come to ME to practice as a group.
I can see at a glance which words to focus on.

Did the same with other groups.
I purchased 10 levels...enough for NOW!

I LOVE the 3 bookmarks to a page!
She did a great job!

I appreciate products that make MY LIFE easier!

THANK  YOU!

I also am using my HFW packets for my kiddos to
PRACTICE...PRACTICE...PRACTICE!!!

How do YOU teach HFW?

I Will NOT QUIT! I WON'T!

I ALMOST QUIT!!!!

What a WEEK!

For those of you who don't know me,
I teach first grade at a low socioeconomic,
high gang neighborhood,
TITLE  1  ( low performing  ),
MULTI languages,
and VERY NEEDY FAMLIES!
I have been at this school for 16 years.
All in grade 1.

I LOVE my school.
I LOVE my job!

I just can't let go of some things.

I work with kids from the VERY best..
( I have had a student who got a
FULL RIDE SCHOLARSHIP to HARVARD!)

She was amazing in grade 1...and amazing when I watched her graduate from high school.

AND...

I have taught kids who have been "lost" in the gang world
and I have never heard FROM or ABOUT them again.

One of my "lost souls" is now a paraprofessional at our school!
Proud teacher here...he turned it around & is MAKING IT!

So my problem isn't the CLASSROOM part.

I just can't quit trying.
I can't leave my emotions at the door.
And it is making me ILL.

I have a student who is destructive.
He is a time-bomb waiting to explode.
BAD family.
NO support.
Mean, angry child.
Parent refuses to get help for him.
Easier to "look away".

I can't.
I tried.

And now...he is trying to destroy my classroom,
my students, and me.

I let him get to me.
I let him question myself.

What am I doing wrong?
Why can't I help him?
Where did I mess up?

Maybe I don't "have it" anymore.....
Maybe it's time to find something else....

And so...

I LET HIM GET INTO MY HEAD!!!!

I wasn't sleeping...

I kept trying to CHANGE things
( classroom set up, behavior plans, groupings, schedules, etc..etc...etc..)
and my other "littles" were suffering.
I knew it.
But I kept "trying" to find that 1 thing.
That 1 thing that would bring him into OUR world.
Peacefully, calmly, without cussing, hateful words, destroying papers, desks, etc.

We KEEP TRYING!
THAT'S WHAT WE DO!

Now...
MY school support is AMAZING.
Admin, psychologist, staff, etc, etc, etc...
GOT MY BACK!

BUT..
things take TIME.
I am trying to survive TOMORROW!
I don't have TIME!

I have IST'd...RTI'd...Behavior planned myself to pieces!
I have MORE DATA than LESSONS!

Nothing.
NADA.
NOPE.

And so...
I forgot the MOST important thing about teaching.

The OTHER students!
They have hung in there with me.

They hug me when I am EMOTIONALLY drained!

They write me LOVE notes
and KINDNESS cards!

And ...they are learning!
He has NOT hurt them!
Their scores are climbing!

So...I am letting go.
I am letting go of the realization
that ALL kids can learn.

He will learn.
He will get help.
He is  a survivor.

It may be this year.
It may be next year.

Mental illness DOES start young.
I have SEEN it.
I have LIVED it.
I am a survivor.

And so.

I WILL NOT  QUIT!

I LOVE  my job!
I am doing lesson plans.
We have Valentine's to make, Chinese New Year, the President's....
We have reading groups where we talk, and giggle together!
We have math where we GOT THIS!

And so...

I think we will PAINT!
( Always makes ME happy!)
 :)

Thanks for the "vent "!

Happy 3 day weekend!

As MLK says...

"I HAVE A DREAM!"

NO I AM NOT SICK!

Hubby saw me.
He asked if I had taken my temperature.
He felt my forehead.

NO!
I AM NOT SICK!

I am

MEAL  PREPPING!

I am not fond of spending
LOTS of time in the kitchen.
I bake when I MUST.
I cook ...once in a while.
When we have friends & family
I LOVE maing  a BIG meal!

But...when I get home from teaching 24 firsties,
I have worked out for 30-40 minutes,
and I sit down to relax...

I DON'T WANT TO COOK!
I don't want to think about it.
I don't want to get "MESSY".
I don't want to CLEAN IT UP!!!!

And so...
I have begun to
MEAL PREP
on the weekend
for the entire
WEEK!
Breakfast, lunch & dinner ( for two ).

For my followers..
You know I have been on
WEIGHT WATCHERS
for about a year.

35 pounds LOST!

WHOOP! WHOOP!

So I got out my
Weight Watchers Cookbook

And started making a
grocery list.

Grocery Store-
another place
 I don't...LOVE..to go!

Got my supplies..

THEN...
I started cooking!

Hubby checked on me at this point!

NO...I  AM  NOT  SICK!  :)

I also hit up my BFF...PINTEREST!

After store...Supplies READY!

Made a BUNCH of these...and then
FROZE THEM!
